New Details about the Upcoming Lumia 550 and Lumia 950

New smartphones from Microsoft may give Android a good run for this money. Microsoft is well aware of what exactly customers dislike about Android is wants to convince them to give them a pretty good reason to switch.

As their names might suggest, Lumia 550 is going to be an entry-level smartphone and 950 and 950 XL are going to be aimed at more demanding customers.

Microsoft is well aware that lower-end Android devices often suffer from a very poor performance. Windows 10 Mobile is supposed to be a much better performing system on less powerful hardware, which makes it an ideal for low-costs devices. Lumia 550 uses Snapdragon 210 chipset, 4.7″ AMLOED display with 720p resolution, 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage space. The battery is supposed to have 1 905 mAh capacity. These specifications don’t sound that great at all, especially if you are used to how similar Android devices perform.

This is where Microsoft is doing several things right. Their mobile operating system is so well optimized that it manages to offer a pleasant user experience and battery performance even on a low-cost hardware. Users who are planning to use their smartphone primarily for text messaging and calling can save some money knowing they phone is able to accomplish everything they ask it to do.

Lumia 550 is going to be available in several different color combinations – white, red, blue, and black.

Lumia 950 and 950 XL

Lumia 950 is aimed at a higher-end segment of the market and wants to rival even the best Android smartphones.

That is not an easy task, but Microsoft is coming well-prepared.

Lumia 950 will offer:

  • Snapdragon 808 with 6 cores
  • Retina scanner for Windows Hello
  • 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of ROM

  • Wireless charging technology, USB Type-C and Windows 10 Mobile

Lumia 950 XL will offer: 

  • black or white polycarbonate body
  • 5.7″ WQHD OLEDdisplay
  • Octa-core Snapdragon 810
  • Retina scanner for Windows Hello
  • 3 GB of RAM with 32 GB of ROM
  • 20 MP PureView camera with triple LED flash
  • 5 MP front-facing camera
  • 3 300 mAh battery capacity
  • Wireless charging technology, USB Type-C and Windows 10 Mobile

Given that new Nexus devices lack wireless charging capability, these new additions to Lumia line of smartphones are, indeed, a very interesting offering.

Depending on how well will Microsoft price these smartphone, they could really be the game changer for Windows Mobile.
